Click to send a brief message for posting
below. It would be very helpful if you included your address(es), the time
period you
lived at OLR and the year you graduated or the years you attended the parish school.
We hope to make it possible for you to contact other former parishioners,
share memories with them, inform them about recent events in your life, and
ask them about the whereabouts of mutual friends.

My name is Anne Marie Condon '65...It's so funny to find this site...we were a
large family of Condons at 340 E. 198 St and Marion Avenue...my Dad's family
from 2654 Marion Ave graduated 2 before us in the late 40's: Danny Moriarty and
then Margaret Moriarty, who went to St Barnabas and died an untimely death a
year or two later... but my family is still intact in Atlanta, GA....Please
contact me for any names/email addresses...
I was at OLR from 1957-1965
and before that at PS 46 from 1956-7. I wish you all well.
I am eternally grateful to Sr. Giordano in the 8th grade who was as terrific an
educator as any I met later at Fordham.
Tues., April 25, 2006,
Sister Margie Mullen, OP (Blauvelt),
mmullen39@optonline.net
I just came across the OLR website and noticed you had a
place in it to remember deceased parishioners. My Mother, Katherine Mullen, a
former parishioner, lived at 2791 Grand Concourse for 24 years - '68 - '92 -
before she moved to Sparkill, NY. She was also an active member of your
Tuesday afternoon Senior Citizen group. She passed away on 11/1/02 at her
home in Sparkill at the age of 96. My brother, Danny Mullen (NYPD), also
lived in 2791 Grand Concourse from 1968 until his death on 7/5/75. My Father,
John Mullen, passed away on 8/16/70 and was buried from Our Lady of Refuge
Church. I would be very grateful if you would add their names to your list so
that they might receive the prayers of those who read it. Thank you very much, Father. I hope you are doing
well. God bless you for all you do and have done in all your years at OLR.

William M. Maloney,
'76, SFC, 6-6,
william.m.maloney@graf.eur.army.mil
Billy Maloney here and greetings from Germany. I graduated back in 1976. I was
an altar boy from 4th-8th grade. Father O'Shaunessey was my favorite priest. I
remember also Father Roos and McDonough now a monsignor I here. I really miss
the days of OLR I really do. I have been in close contact with Mona Eyckmans
concerning the upcoming reunion, however my duties may put me right back in
Iraq. I was there already for 16 months and right before that spent a year in
the Sinai in Egypt. I saw a lot of historical places associated with the bible
from MT. Sinai to spending Christmas Eve in Bethlehem. Imagine that a guy from
the Bronx seeing all of these wonderful places. When I was in Somalia, Bosnia
and other places that the worst of mankind lives, I have never, ever forgot who
I am and where I came from. I miss playing stickball, going to Yankee games and
most of all chocolate egg creams...those I miss. Father, if by some miracle,
I'd like to see the school, play some ball in the gym, take a shower in the old
locker room and go through the church where I was an altar boy so many years
ago. Heck I'll bring a sleeping bag and rack out somewhere if it's ok for I
feel I am coming full circle in my life. I am truly lucky to be alive and I
feel so bad losing so many people that I grew up with.

flooding back. I am in the Army currently stationed in Southern Germany. I
have been in touch with several of my classmates thanks to the efforts of Mona
Eyckmans. I have been informed of several tragic losses of classmates and
friends whom I have very fond memories of. They will live forever in my heart
and memories of a time in my life that was innocent and pure. I miss chocolate
egg creams, stickball, and going to NY Yankee games. I was also an altar boy

Mon., Aug 12, 2005,
Joseph Duggan, '70, 2661 Decatur Ave.
jfduggan001@aol.com, I was the last of five in our family to graduate from OLR.
My parents have both died - Jim and Catherine in the last decade. OLR was
so much a part of my life growing up. It took a long time for me to
differentiate between not liking school and OLR. I remember most the
church more than the school. I always loved going to church at OLR. I was an
Altar Boy for several years in the Chapel and in the Church. I knew when I
was four years old that I wanted to be a priest and it kept deepening inside of
me throughout my time at OLR. While I studied to be a Roman Catholic priest, God
had something else in mind for me. Alas next year I will be ordained an
Episcopal Priest in the Diocese of Los Angeles where my wife is also a priest.
I have maintained my Roman Catholic connections through family and friends.
I am delighted that OLR has a website like this where people like me can get
reconnected after living some life to check-in with one another. I just
wrote to my friend, Simon O'Donnell, whom I had lost contact with for almost 20
years. Thank you OLR for my vocation and for rediscovering one of my
friends.
Fri., May 13, 2005, Mary, grandniece of Msgr. Nemecek, cw-mann@sbcglobal.net Does anyone remember Father Nemecek? He was my
great uncle, and I can remember pictures and his ceremony as a Monsignor.
Wed., April 13, 2005, Camille
DeSantis, Class of 1975,
Camille.DeSantis@bioscicom.net
I graduated from OLR in 1975. My brother Val graduated in 1972. We lived on
194th St. between Marion and Decatur. I remember OLR fondly,
especially the latter years when I performed in Mr. Rooney’s theatre group
(remember “I remember Mamma”?) and sang in the choir. I also remember drawing
the cover to our graduation mass program – it features the WTC just as it was
being built! I don’t know what made me think of OLR today, but I typed in a
fellow classmate’s name into google and this link came up. The magic of the
Internet, huh? So much has changed since 1975, but one thing hasn’t – my
fondest memories of a much simpler, happy time in the Bronx. I only wish people
today could know how great it was. Don’t you agree? If anyone remembers me (in
a good way, hopefully!) drop a note. Hope everyone is well – can’t believe that
this year is our 30th anniversary of graduation. Wow! God bless you
all…. Camille DeSantis, MT (ASCP), Executive Vice President, Creative Director,

Fri. 2004/05/21 Dorothy Hanrahan Shillinglaw,
Class of June 1942,
sdshillinglaw@prodigy.net
I was the third of five Hanrahans that attended OLR in the 1930s and 40s:
- Donald, Class of January 1939 (see his Message Board posts 2/6 and 2/7/04).
- Edward, Class of January 1940; deceased.
- Dorothy, Class of June 1942.
- Rosemary, Class of January 1944; deceased.
- Margaret Ann attended OLR until 7-A, spring 1947; she is also deceased
We lived at 2720 Decatur Ave. (across from the bottom of what we called
Snake Hill) until early 1942, then 2775 Bainbridge Ave. (fourth house north
of PS-46 schoolyard) until moving out of the parish to University Ave. about
1949/50.
I have lived in Connecticut for 38 years. My husband and I have three sons and
six grandchildren, all in Connecticut.
I would love to hear from other survivors of the Class of June 1942, and also
from anyone that knew any of the Hanrahans
To
Donald (Hanrahan): Don't blame Lupus for Father Sheeran's fall. He ended his days faithful to his
master and innocent of inflicting injury. He was replaced by two cocker
spaniels, and it was one of the cockers that tripped Father Sheeran. The
injury must have been severe because my recollection is that Father Sheeran
was inactive in the parish for a very long time after his fall. I remember
Father Sheeran's bringing Lupus to visit my classroom in 1st or 2nd grade,
and Lupus was a great hit with the entire class. From Donald Hanrahan To Joe Delaney:
I had Rt. 10 as a Bronx Home News boy. It was hard but lucrative. Some of us
quit over a dispute with the manager. A bad decision of mine. I still have BHN photos of (1) the 8th Inf. of the NY State Guard, under arms,
marching out of Kingsbridge Armory on our way to Camp Smith and (2) Boro Pres
Lyons visiting us there, both in 1942.
My brother Edward (R.I.P.) and I were among Fr. Sheeran's favorite altar boys.
We were a team because we were of the same height, though Ed was 14 months
younger. After WW-II, Feb or March 1946, Sheeran had a special Mass and asked
us to serve in uniform - Ed in his sailor suit, I in Marine greens. I showed
up without campaign ribbons because Ed didn't have any; Sheeran sent me home
to get them.
Ed and I had belonged to the Catholic Boys Brigade which wore WW-I U.S.
Army-type uniforms, marched in parades, and learned close-order drill (WW-I
style) and the manual of arms (with some kind of old rifles) from Sgt O'Hara
of the National Guard. Fr. Sheeran had seen bloody service as chaplain with
the 4th Inf. Div in France and when he arrived as pastor didn't like to see
boys playing soldier. I'd heard that he disbanded the Brigade at OLR for that
reason, but it seems to be back in a different uniform.
About the same time, I think, he abolished prize fights in the auditorium. Not
appropriate in the same building with the Blessed Sacrament!
Fr. Sheeran had a German shepherd named Lupus (wolf) who tripped him up,
causing a fracture. After a morning, weekday Mass, which we served alone, he'd
give me two cents and send me over to the "candy store" for the NY
Times. That's when it was worth reading. He paid us fifty cents a week
for serving Mass. Unheard of!
Wed., 2004/02/11, Donald Hanrahan,
Class of Jan. 1939,
grannybop@verizon.net ,
Msgr Jenik:
I was carried away with my war talk yesterday & neglected to respond to your
mention of Joe Delaney. We've been in touch since I wrote him with what I know
about the Maloney twins who were in my class. I don't remember Joe but do
remember very well his sister Patricia who is closer to me in age. She's in
the OLR e-mail list as Pat Mulcare, class of 1938, w/ an address that's OBE.
It was a shock when Joe told me that she's in a nursing home in NJ. I remember
her as a pretty, high-spirited girl with long, blonde hair on a bicycle. It's
hard to imagine her now as an old woman (80 or close to it) in a nursing home.
Bet you could make a homily out of that! Anyway, she's on my prayer list now.
Thurs. April 1, 2004
Msgr Jenik: Thanks for posting my class (Jan39) photo. My mother (God rest her
soul) wrote the names on the back. Whoever transcribed her 65-year old
script did a good job, but there are a few typos. No one would notice without
zooming, but for the record they are:
Caulter should be Coulter; Haskins, Hoskins; Kaulter, Coulter; Heartnett,
Hartnett; Sevese, Senese; Matto, Motto; and Maria, Marie. Very respectfully,
Donald Hanrahan 2004/05/19 Wed. This old grad lives in Falls Church, VA, with his wife of 53 years, the
former Louise King. They have six children and 17 grandchildren. He is a Marine
veteran of WW-II who was on Iwo Jima with the Fourth Marine Division, earned a
PhD in electrical engineering, retired from the Naval Reserve as commander, and
from the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC. He would like to hear from
any survivors of this illustrious class, or any news of his classmates.

modern dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Co for about a decade. After that I
went back to school in PA for physical therapy. I got a Master's and a Mister
(met my husband in Pittsburgh)! Am living in CA with "Mister" and 2

Hi, My name is Gail DelSavio
and I graduated from OLR in 1968. I just found this site and was
surprised to see some names that I recognized after all these years!
Does anyone have any info on a fellow '68 graduate who's name was Maureen
Leahy (at the time of graduation). If so, I would appreciate some input.
Otherwise, I'd love to hear from anyone who graduated around this time that I
might know. Best Wishes to all ~ Gail

Lived on the Grand Concourse between Miriam Avenue and 197th Street from birth
until 1983. Hi fellow classmates! I see no one else from the class of
1982 has posted anything, so I thought someone should start. I graduated from
St. Barnabas HS in 1986, received my bachelor's degree in Accounting from
Manhattan College in 1989 and received my MBA in Systems Management from
Manhattan College in 2000. I started my career in 1989 with KPMG, LLP who I
spent 3 years with. I have worked in the City University of New York
ever since because of my love for Education. I worked at the Central
Office for 8 years and now I work in the Hunter College Business Office as the
Deputy Director of Business Services. Monsignor (Father) Jenik you certainly
have done a lot with OLR and in your ministry. I remember when I
graduated in 1982, you were just starting out; now you are "way" up
there! I have very fond memories of OLR and hope to hear from some of
my classmates soon. I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying life. My

Sat, 2 Mar 2002, Guy Miata, TheMaestroGM@aol.com
Hi Fr. Jenik, First off, what a great website ....
Found out about it tonight while having dinner with my sister and some friends
... I attended OLR from 1954 through 1962. I had Sister Diedre in 1st grade,
Miss Duffy in 2nd, Sister Kenelm in 3rd (who I fondly recall used to use my head
for karate practice ... something to do with my NEVER getting anything higher
than a "D" in "completes tasks assigned"), Miss
McGuiness (a woman, for whom no punishment assignment was too hard) in 4th
grade, Sister Mary Rita in 5th, Sister John Joseph in 6th (I once saved her from
falling down the stairs in school .... I caught her and stopped her fall, she
looked at me and said, "Bet you're sorry you did that!") Sister
Adolph ... a four foot tall terror if ever one existed, in 7th (to whom by the
way, I will be eternally grateful for her insane composition writing assignments
wherein we could not repeat words), and Sister Giordano in 8th.
My favorite nun of all was Sister Incarnata, the music
teacher (music teacher extraordinaire I might add).... she gave me the only
formal music education I've ever had, and no, regrettably I did not take piano
lessons there, just the regular weekly classes, but did manage to go on to
become, among other things in my life, a professional musician.
I would be totally remiss if I failed to mention the ever jovial lunch
room lady, Mrs. Scarpelli, who gave us hot soup, sandwiches, dessert and
milk every day. One final note .... Not that I was a "bad" student ...
but when my sister, Jo-Anne, followed 6 years later and the teachers asked if
she were my sister, she would say no for fear that they'd think she was also
bad!!! I must have figured out at a very early age that, in organizations,
no one ever really got anywhere by blindly following the rules........ It's been
fun reminiscing as I wrote this and welcome emails from anyone else in the Class
of '62 (or others for that matter). Guy Miata

dated Oct. 10, 2001
Dear Ed( Kiernan): I graduated from Our Lady of Refuge in June 1941. My sister , Pat
Delaney, graduated in June 1938. There were two Maloney brothers (could have
been twins?) who were in her class. One of them was nicknamed "Tootsie",
both were redheaded. I remember seeing at least one of them in a Marine
uniform, sometime in the 1940's. After the war, I remember seeing one of them working for the New York City
Department of Sanitation.. Maybe their records would help you in your search.
Good luck. And "Semper Fi" Joe Delaney

Dear Father Jenik, Thank you so much for answering me so quickly. I
found my graduation picture from eighth grade with all the names of my
classmates on the back. I gave you the wrong date. I
graduated in Jan. '42 not '41. No wonder I didn't know the name Tom Delaney. A friend of mine has a scanner and he is going to help me
send the picture to your
website plus all the names of my classmates. It seemed so funny to
see OLR....Went there so many years ago. Father Nemecek married me
and my husband in 1950, so we just celebrated our 51st wedding anniversary. I
should have said Monsignor Nemecek but, he was still a priest when we got
married. He was a very warm and wonderful man. The love of
the Lord shone through him and I shall never forget how he kind he was to me as
a child. Thanks again for going to so
much trouble. Virginia Henderson Wheeler Merry
Christmas and a blessed New Year. ALSO January 10, 2002,Virginia
Henderson Dear Fr. Jenik, Thank you so much for giving me instructions
on how to get to the message board at the website. I never
dreamed there would be so many graduates from OLR seeking to find their
ex-classmates. It was most interesting to read all of them. Too
bad I didn't see any of the kids I knew but, then so many graduated way after I
did. Thanks again, Virginia Wheeler

to hang out until 11:00p.m. no fear of ever being hurt. How we would
would play basketball in the gym and hang out on the steps of the Parish Center. It
was a great community and I wish my girls could experience what we had.

each grade.....Miss Duffy's slashing red pencil in the 3rd.....sitting next to
Donna Muscalina with a teary eyed Miss Mc Gneiss as news of Kennedy's
assassination came across the PA in the 4th . And in the bittersweet 8th, I can
still see Sister Marione peering around her habit, trying to decide if what she
heard was what she heard..... I remember going to the Principles'

I'm sorry to let you know that Ken McGuire passed away on Sunday, 4/22/01. He
is being waked in Brooklyn on Wednesday and Thursday, with a funeral mass on
Friday. He will be buried in Gate of Heaven. Joan Cintron

also graduated from OLR. As mentioned on the website's message board, Fr. Robert P.

the tiny church where he was baptized, received his first communion and
confirmation, and was ordained in Bernardsville, NJ, and where he is now
buried with his mother (who died in February of this year) and father.

there with so many wonderful stories about him. So glad he was so happy
there.

McNally (nee. McNamee), Crazykat33@aol.com Hi Msgr. Jenik. My name is Kathleen McNally (nee. McNamee)..I graduated in
1979 and went on to St. Barnabas H.S. My brother Jimmy told me about
this site and I decided to look at it. It brought back a lot of great
memories looking at all the former OLR graduates. I can honestly say that some
of the best times of my life were hanging out in the schoolyard, hanging out in
the GYM club and across the street from the school (in front of Creamer's Deli).
I just thought you would like to know that all of the girls that I hung out with
still hang together. We get together every Christmas for a Christmas dinner( 13
of us) and talk about the good old days. I have been married for 15 years with 3
beautiful children. My oldest daughter ,Erin ,is 14 years old and attends St.
Barnabas H.S.( my old school-how ironic!), my second daughter, Kelly is 12 years
old, and my son Mikey is 10 years old. They both go to St.
Barnabas Elementary School and are involved in everything! I always tell them
stories about my childhood and OLR and they eat it up. Well, I will stop running
on and just say "hi". I actually work as a sergeant in the 48 pct and
I talk to cops in the 52 pct and tell them about my old school and
fond memories. Take care Msgr. I hope everything is going
great with the school and church. Kathleen

Hello Padre, how's the Bronx holding up? I saw
you on the news and in the paper a few times and it brings me back to OLR and
the days of the schoolyard, good times/bad times but great memories I'll always
have. I'm "up the line" as the saying goes. Ed Deiser and I are
neighbors. We ski together. All is well on my end, still married to Eileen
(together 20 years)and have three beautiful daughters. Still with Yonkers PD and
working as a CPA in my spare time. It's a busy time of the year. Anyway, I saw
you on this site and thought you would get a kick out of a name from the past.
Take care and keep the faith. I'll tell Ed to drop you a line.

down. My brother Dan and sister Ellen also attended.
Was glad to find the OLR site. Anyone that remembers us please get in touch.
What became of Fr. Mulcahy?? ~Fri., April 28, 2006,
I was looking around the web site again. Hadn't visited in
awhile. I thought I would send a copy of the class of 1962 photo I managed to
keep. Fortunately, I had scanned the picture a few years ago. We took
a total hit from Hurricane Katrina so all our paper pictures were lost. I
thank God for today's technology. All is well with my family and we have resumed a fairly normal
day to day existence. The area here along the entire Mississippi coast is in
tough shape and continues to need prayers and assistance and will for several
years. Please continue to pray for all the victims of Katrina and Rita
and when possible, remind people that the recovery is in the very early
stages. Warmest Regards.

Dear Monsignor~
A friend and I visited the school (Class of 1952) several years ago. A wonderful lady (after
initial misgivings) escorted us through the church and school. That was My
school and My church ~my first communion~confirmation~ graduation~and marriage.
Father Sheeran was the pastor until the year I graduated (the church was draped
in black). It's exciting to have OLR on the internet!

I just visited your web site. It is wonderful.
I attended OLR from 1961-1969. Msgr. Snyder and then Msgr. Nemecek
were the pastors then. I missed the reunion but would love to know if I
can purchase the book I believe was produced for it. My mom still lives in the
Bronx -Woodlawn. All four of her kids went to 8 years at OLR. I can
still remember all my teachers vividly - Sister Bernadelle was the principal,
Sister Ethelina was my favorite. I'm sure most of my teachers have passed
away, but would love to know if any of them are still around and reachable.

Hello Monsignor Jenik, I would first like
to say how much I enjoy the Alumni Email Exchange and Message Board. I am now in
contact with many old friends that I had lost track of over twenty years ago.
I would also like to request a copy of my Communion
Certificate. It would be under the name Rosemary Lawson during the 1966/67
school year. I am trying also to locate a copy of my Baptismal Certificate. Both
my parents are deceased but I believe I was baptized at Christ the King Church.
I you happen to have that with the other records I would appreciate a copy also.
Please let me know the cost, etc. of this. My husband and I are
in the process of having our marriage blessed by the church after being civilly
married for 23 years. It is an exciting time for us and I think I have you to
thank. When I found the OLR site I decided to enter another site you had listed
there, Catholic Online. On Catholic Online I had many conversations with other
Catholics including a few Priests and very knowledgeable deacons of the Church.
It definitely renewed my faith. Thank you again Father.

website. It's wonderful to see that the Parish is thriving and there still is a
strong sense of community. Sheila O'Neill here from N. Ireland .Saw your invite
on the Bronx Board. I visit it often to try and make contact with the old gang
that graduated in 1980. No success so far but I'm sure I'll make contact here.
Hard to believe that it is twenty years since we moved from 2690 Morris
Avenue ( E 196th St. area ) but time does move on. If anyone remembers the
"O'Neill's" ( Catherine, Malachy and Sheila ) who moved to N.

all the best, Sheila.
